Beyonce, Killers, Judas Priest CDs named worst of 2008

Tens of thousands of CDs were released in 2008. Yet, few, if any, were more disappointing/bad than these. Here are the “Bottom 5 CDs of 2008.”

1. “I Am “… Sasha Fierce,” Beyoncé (Columbia):

When an established artist introduces an alter ego — i.e., Garth Brooks’ Chris Gaines — listeners are usually in big trouble. That’s definitely the case with “Sasha Fierce,” an overly ambitious two-disc set that features about an EP’s worth of enjoyable material.

Judas Priest

Judas Priest

2. “Nostradamus,” Judas Priest (Sony):

Nearly as troubling as the alter-ego is the dreaded concept album, especially when it’s handled by a metal band. For its latest platter that doesn’t matter, Priest tells the tale of the 16th-century prophet Nostradamus, through such songs as “Pestilence and Plague” and “Future of Mankind.” The result is every bit as bad as one would expect.

The Killers

The Killers

3. “Day and Age,” The Killers (Island):

“Human” was the worst radio song I heard in 2008. The fact that it was picked as the lead single from “Day and Age” only further highlights modern rock’s most perplexing question: How is it that this band remains so popular?

E-40

4. “The Ball Street Journal,” E-40 (Warner Bros):

My popularity rating in the “Yay” will surely plummet with this selection. “Ball Street” isn’t a bad record, just one that lacks the kind of fresh beats and ideas that made the Vallejo rapper’s last offering, 2006’s “My Ghetto Report Card,” such a triumph.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend

5. “Vampire Weekend,” Vampire Weekend (XL):

File this one under most over-hyped albums in history. It’s a nice, little record, containing a few catchy tunes, yet it fails to live up to the deafening buzz created by the “tastemakers,” the ones that were obviously too busy comparing Vampire Weekend to the Talking Heads to actually bother to critique the record.
