Blues legend Koko Taylor has died at the age of 80

Complications from a gastrointestinal surgery were the cause of death.

Taylor, born Cora Walton, hailed from Tennessee and moved to to Chicago with virtually nothing when she was 24. She was interested in music from an early age and was nicknamed Koko because of her extreme love of chocolate.

Last month Taylor won her 29th Blues Music Award and performed for the crowd. She was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1997 and has won a myriad of other awards, including a Grammy.

Taylor was born Cora Walton and picked up the nickname “Koko” because of her love of chocolate as a child.

She is survived by her husband Hays Harris, daughter Joyce Threatt, and grandchildren, great grandchildren.
